Printable Bio

James Katz (CPA/ABV, MBT, CVA) joined DS&B, Ltd. in 2003 and brings over 20 years of experience working closely with mid-market businesses and individuals to establish and meet business and financial goals. Jamie has expanded his focus from income taxes and accounting to include business valuations.

Within the DS&B, Ltd. valuation and litigation support department, Jamie has developed a business valuation practice to assist owners through transition periods. Major transitions are commonly linked to capital requirements, retirement, or other, unforeseen circumstances. Capital and financing issues develop during periods of growth or decline. Valuations may assist owners through mergers or acquisitions and are required to obtain certain Small Business Administration (SBA) loans. Planning for owner retirement may involve gifting ownership interests or preparing for a sale to family members, key employees, or outside parties. Valuations are also important following unforeseen circumstances such as shareholder disputes, divorces, or for determining estate tax obligations. Valuations are an integral part of planning for transitions and unforeseen events and can help determine buy-sell agreement amounts and life insurance requirements.

Jamie and the valuation department have experience across many industries with particular expertise with personal service industries and medical practices, construction and real estate development, and manufacturing and distribution.

Jamie is a member of the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA), an organization made up of more than 5,000 CPA's practicing in the business valuation field. Jamie has also earned the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) designation from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Jamie earned a B.S. in accounting and a Master's in business taxation, both from the University of Minnesota. Jamie served on the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants business valuation conference planning committee and is currently treasurer for the Minnesota chapter of NACVA.

In his spare time, Jamie enjoys golfing, traveling, and spending time with his family. He lives in Golden Valley with his wife, Cindy, and three daughters.
